Apr 29, 2013 ALT Linux Seventh Platform Released

April 29, 2013, Moscow. ALT Linux announces the release of ALT Linux Seventh Platform (p7), a new stable branch of ALT Linux repositories designed for development, testing, distribution, updating and support of all kinds of complex IT systems, ranging from embedded and mobile devices to enterprise servers and data-centers. The Seventh Platform is created by the ALT Linux Team as part of the Sisyphus project and is maintained by the ALT Linux company.

Among the principal new features of the Seventh Platform is full support for the ARMv7 architecture. ARMv7 repository (armh) is now integrated into the Seventh Platform, and, thanks to the newest server equipment from Marvell (Marvell Technology Group Ltd), the package versions are now synchronized with the repository based on Intel 32-bit and 64-bit architectures.

The ARMv7 repository contains approximately 10000 source packages that allow to create integrated server, desktop, mobile and embedded systems based on ARMv7 and Intel architectures within the unified framework of the Seventh Platform. The Seventh Platform ARMv7 repository is one of the world’s largest and does not have any counterparts in Russia.

ALT Linux Seventh Platform supports the UEFI boot technology, systemd initialization system, IPv6 protocol, creation of LUKS encrypted partitions during installation and includes the newest versions of system software and applications: Linux kernel 3.8.9, Xorg 1.14, Gnome 3.8.1, KDE 4.10.2, Firefox 20, Libreoffice 4.0.2.2.

In order to minimize the time to production, ALT Linux now offers those users who prefer to customize the components and graphical layout of their systems a choice of compact starter kits with any of 9 different desktop environments for i586 and x86_64 architectures, as well as Englightenment and KDE desktop environments for ARMv7/Nexus7 architecture.

Over the next few years, products based on the Seventh Platform will substitute earlier releases based on the Sixth Platform, such as ALT Linux 6.0 Centaurus, security-hardened operating system ALT Linux SPT 6.0, ALT Linux 6.0 Simply, ALT Linux 6.0 Kdesktop, and Informika 6.0 for Schools.

ALT Linux will continue to support products based on the Sixth Platform until the end of their support cycles, while the certificate for ALT Linux SPT 6.0 from the Federal Service for Technical and Export Control of Russia will be extended for another 3 years.
